Upward Bound Summer Tutor-Counselor

2025 UPWARD BOUND SUMMER TUTOR-COUNSELOR POSITION

TITLE: Tutor-Counselor

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time/Summer Position/Student/Non-Exempt Contingent I

SALARY RANGE: $3,500 stipend plus Room and Board included

EMPLOYMENT DATES: June 23 - August 1, 2025

Mandatory training will be held the week of June 16, 2025

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary objective of the Pre-College Program’s Upward Bound program’s residential positions is to ensure the well-being of the students in their charge, especially regarding safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships within the group, and application to studies.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Successful candidates will assume supervisory responsibility over a group of high school students and serve as role models for responsible behavior and personal integrity. Since students are minors, the program staff is responsible for constant and close supervision to ensure students' well-being. Beyond supervision, staff must plan and prepare to lead or actively participate in all extra-curricular activities and some classes. Unlike the position of a college RA, this job requires continuous interaction with students. It allows little to no personal time from Sunday night to Friday afternoon after students are dismissed.

Residence Hall-Students and Staff will live in Queen Ann Hall on the north campus.

  • Provide personal, social, or skill development programming for a 10-student unit and work with other residential staff to provide similar programming to the total group of students. Meet with the student group every Sunday evening.
  • Regulate student behavior and take disciplinary action according to the program discipline code. Communicate all problems promptly to the Academic Advisor, Director, and/or the Program Assistant.
  • Ensure there is no traffic between the girls' and boys' floors/rooms/buildings.
  • Monitor the conditions of the dorm rooms and report any problems.

Tutoring

  • Work with other residential staff to organize and provide tutoring for 2.0 hours each evening.
  • Communicate regularly with teachers concerning tutoring needs and the progress of students.

Activities

  • Attend daily and weekly staff meetings.
  • Provide or assist with an elective and athletic activity (ex, basketball, kickball, knitting, stress management, Zumba, film study, etc).
  • Actively supervise students during all mealtimes, free times, elective activities, athletic activities, study hours, and field trips.
  • Assist instructors in class and field trips as needed.
  • Be on call to assist with classes or emergencies.
  • Be responsible for gathering and returning funds, equipment, vehicles, or supplies used in program activities.
  • Run errands; shop for supplies.
  • Attend and successfully complete staff orientation.
  • Co-facilitate the Student Responsibility Board

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate students, Undergraduate juniors, seniors, or recent college graduates with above-average academic records. Experience with and sensitivity to high school students of culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. To be successful as a Tutor Counselor, one must be dedicated to working with young people and have extraordinary patience and stamina to work whenever students need them.
